For my fifth album of the month, I am choosing Labyrinthine by Faetooth.

Faetooth is a band that I found not that long ago. I first discovered them when I came across the track “Strange Ways” on YouTube. From the very first listen I was immediately sold! Ever since then this track gets played multiple times! Bit by bit I got to know the rest of the album “Remnants of the Vessel”.

Not that long after I started listening to them, they started teasing a new album, releasing some new tracks. These tracks won me over right away! My curiosity peaked I started looking around, and they were doing a European tour. I immediately booked tickets for the show in Belgium and had an amazing time at the show!

A few days after the show the vinyl finally arrived at the house, and I immediately played it. It is an amazing album, just like the previous one. So why did I choose “Labyrinthine” and not the previous album? Faetooth is known for their unique “fairy-doom” style with a bit of “doomgaze” mixed through. Where “Remnants of the Vessel” was more the typical doom metal, fairly slow and heavy, yet still with clean vocals. Labyrinthine is a nice evolution and departure from this, leaning much more into the heavier style and sound. This album is a lot heavier and grittier, especially in the vocals.

All of this creates a very heavy, yet somewhat sultry, atmosphere. I find the album very ethereal and you just have to let the album role over you! Especially the first time you are listening to it, you just have to play the album from start to finish in a single go! If you can, you should definitely use high quality speakers or headphones.

When you are listening the second time, you should definitely look up the lyrics and read along, as they can be quite hard to understand. But once you read the lyrics, you will find that the music is a perfect match for them and vice versa.

For many fans, “Hole” is the highlight of this album, and while it is a damn good track, my favourite track on this album is “White Noise”. This track layers clean vocals with absolute howling and screaming, both singing the same lyrics;

Can we sit like this forever? Let us sit like this forever

The way the emphasis rolls of the “forever” gives the impression of some loathing mixed with something hopeful. Absolutely love it!
